Cosmetic Bonding
Is Cosmetic Bonding Right For You?
Do you have a cracked, chipped, discoloured or misshapen tooth? If so, our dentists may recommend cosmetic bonding as a solution. This cost-effective cosmetic dental treatment can also be used to close small gaps between your teeth. Cosmetic bonding involves your dentist applying a tooth-coloured resin to the affected parts of your tooth to repair it or restore its appearance.
For many patients, the appearance of their smile is their biggest concern. It’s important to note, however, that fixing small chips and cracks in your teeth prevents further damage and helps maintain your oral health.
Tooth bonding is a suitable treatment option for teeth with minor damage or aesthetic issues. For these minor issues, this treatment offers a simple and affordable alternative to veneers and crowns.
If your tooth has experienced significant damage and lost a lot of its structure, a crown may be a better option. If you want to lighten or straighten the appearance of your teeth, there are also better-suited options, like veneers.
Cosmetic bonding is mostly for those with healthy teeth, who are seeking a small cosmetic adjustment or minor repair.
The Process
- Your dentist will complete a digital smile design to show you what your cosmetic bonding will look like when complete.
- Your dentist will help you choose a resin colour that is the closest match to your natural tooth colour.
- They will then prepare your tooth by cleaning the tooth enamel that they will apply the resin to.
- Next, your dentist will apply the resin to your tooth and shape it as needed.
- Once you and your dentist are happy with the application of the resin, it will be set in place with a special light.
- Minor adjustments can still be made once the resin is set.
- Your dentist will polish it for a smooth and natural-looking finish.
Taking Care of Your Bonded Tooth
No dental restoration will ever be as strong as your natural teeth and enamel. The resin used in bonding is durable, but you need to take care to ensure the longevity of your treatment.
Avoid doing things like chewing on pens and ice. It’s essential to be mindful when eating hard foods like nuts and hard lollies which can damage your bonding.
Composite resin is less effective at resisting stains than your enamel. So, you may experience long-term discolouration if you consume a lot of coffee, red wine, or use tobacco products. Unfortunately, composite resin does not respond to teeth whitening. A natural progression after cosmetic bonding may be porcelain veneers, which are both lasting and stain resistant.
Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping up with regular dental check-ups is key to your oral health and extending the benefits of any dental treatment.
